This paper explores five historical trends in the shifting understanding of personhood in late modernity. These five trends, drawn primarily from sociological and anthropological research, are set against the certain classic tensions regarding the nature of the self in human consciousness and historical embodiment. The article defends the position that the classic Christian understanding of the self is what most aptly resolves these tensions and provides a truly integrated self which reflects the mysteries of God's own purpose in creation.
