The Polygamy Debate : A Progress Report

By: Material type: ArticleArticlePublication details: New Canaan, Connecticut : American Society of Missiology Apr.1982Description: pages, 161-170
Contents:
Professor Hilman focuses here upon the state of the question, rather than the arguments entailed in the debate, whether or to what extent the monogamy rule of the christian churches should be modified with respect to the immemorial customs of plural marriage among most of the peoples in Africa south of the Sahara. As a central figure in this historical discussion, his presentation is partly autobiographical and it reflects particularly the Roman Catholic encounter with the question. But this debate involves principles and perspectives of great interest to anyone engaged in cross-cultural ministry anywhere in the world.
