The Indian Institute of Advanced Study, in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Study in Sociology of the Delhi University, convened a Seminar on the Tribal Situation in India (1969). The objectives of the Seminar were: 1. Stocking of the availble information on the basis of the first-hand studies on the problems of tribes, region by region, 2. framing detailed suggestions regarding the problems which need immeditte ttention, and 3. evolving policy guidelines on national unity and integaation of tribes. in keeping with its tradition of building up multidisciplinary approaches to the investigation of social/national problem, the institue brought together a cross-section of the people connected with tribalsituation: there were anthroplogists, sociologists, social workers, jounalists, political leaders, representatives of tribal research institutes and other institues invoved in trabal studies. the book contains the proceedings of the seminar and the payer presented. this work became very popular at the policy, teaching and research levels and went into many reprints. the first work of its kind with its comprehensive survey and policy suggestion, it was described as `seminal and path-breaking`. the present edition contains some fresh material
