520 _aThe paper attempts to understand the crucial role played by geography and various geographical factors in shaping the history of the region of Assam, during the medieval times. Nothing much was known about the region during the medieval times. Despite earlier attempts, the region beyond Bengal could not be brought under the rule of any other power, and the region continued to have its own isolated development. The paper explores how the existing geographical features made it difficult for the Mughal armies to wrest control over the region. However, the rich floral and faunal resources of the region, were an attraction that made the Mughals as well as later the British to make their foray into the area. The paper attempts to highlight these endeavors and traces the making of the region of Assam, from an outlying region beyond the Subah of Bengal to an economiocally viable province under the English East India Company.
